National Smile Month - How to Achieve a Brighter, Whiter Smile Naturally

It’s National Smile Month, so we’re going to give you everything you need to know about natural and organic oral care - the good, the bad and the ugly! We’re also going to arm you with the best products to achieve a brighter, whiter smile naturally.

Three Questionable Chemicals in Oral Care

Fluoride – we have had it drilled into us that fluoride is important in our toothpaste because it helps strengthen your enamel. However, there is a fine balance as overexposure to fluoride can lead to fluorosis - which causes white streaks or marks on our teeth, and can even lead to browning of the teeth. Fluoride is added to water in parts of the UK, but there is much debate as to whether it is an essential part of the diet just because it appears in our bones and teeth!

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – this is added to aid with lathering of toothpaste, which as consumers we know appeals to us. The presence of this quality makes us feel like our mouths have been thoroughly cleaned. The problem wiw SLS is that is can be a cause of bad breath, as it can have a drying action and decrease saliva in the mouth, which allows bacteria to thrive.

Alcohol - supposed to kill bacteria in the mouth, but actually dries out the mouth which encourages bacteria to grow! It may also damage the tissue inside your mouth, leading to other issues.

Lucy Rose’s 4 Favourite Oral Care Products

Dr Bronner’s All-One Toothpaste

We are huge Dr Bronner's fans so we were extremely excited when they launched their organic toothpaste earlier this year. Made with 70% organic ingredients, this low-foaming formula has no synthetic detergent foaming agents (such as SLS), is fluoride-free, vegan and cruelty-free, with no artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, or sweeteners - none!

It’s available in peppermint, cinnamon and anise flavours, all so delicious we keep them all in our bathroom and choose whichever one takes our fancy.

JASON Powersmile Whitening Toothpaste & Mouthwash

These contain a blend of 3 natural teeth whiteners: sodium bicarbonate, blue-green algae and  calcium ascorbate, along with anti-bacterial perilla seed extract and grapefruit seed extract to help prevent tartar build up. Essential oils of peppermint, spearmint and menthol leave your mouth feeling fresh.

For best results, use twice daily, brushing first for at least two minutes, and following up with the mouthwash.

Green People Toothpaste

Certified by Ecocert, this is a 100% natural toothpaste available in great flavours - Fennel, Citrus and Minty Cool. Fluoride-free, SLS-free, and suitable for all the family. Ooh, and it’s vegan & cruelty free too!

Nutiva Coconut Oil

If you haven’t tried oil pulling, we highly recommend it! First thing in the morning take a tablespoon (or teaspoon if you can’t stand that much oil swishing in your mouth!) and rinse/move around your mouth and through your teeth for twenty minutes (or as long as you can stand!) Your mouth will feel cleaner and your teeth whiter.
