Top 7 Superfoods for Super Beauty!

With so many food fads and trends in today's market, it can be difficult sometimes to separate the wheat from the chaff (note wheat is definitely not a superfood - far from it!) To stand a chance of recognising what's a superfood and what's just another clever marketing ploy, we must first understand what a superfood is. A superfood is a food which is richer and denser in phytonutrients that your average food and has positive health benefits with few/no negatives. 

The problem with the term superfood is that there is no standard set, no minimum bar that the food has to pass to become super. But, without a doubt, some foods are more nutritious, just like some are more delicious, than others! It's important that we eat a well balanced diet to maintain our wellbeing, healthy weight and to let our bodies perform at their very best. Some superfoods that are easy to consider adding to your diet (you may even be eating them already!) are:

  • Blueberries; high in antioxidants Vitamin C and Polyphenols (specifically Anthocyanins) which help fight against free radical damage in the body. Free radicals are the bad guys who cause oxidative stress in the body, and in the skin this can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and more!
  • Broccoli; good source of the antioxidants vitamin C and carotenes, which help protect against many degenerative diseases, including cancer and heart disease, may slow the ageing process of the skin as well as all our body, and support the immune system.
  • Oily Fish, such as Salmon; high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent and reduce inflammation, a key cause of ageing. Omega-3s also help prevent depression and protect against the onset of dementia.
  • Tomatoes; rich in Vitamin C and Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals. Also high in beta carotene, which may promote mental alertness and slow conditions like Alzheimer's.
  • Pumpkin; both the flesh and the seeds of Pumpkins are extremely nutritious. The flesh is high in fibre as well as Vitamins C and E, Magnesium and Potassium, along with a variety of carotenoids – one of the most abundant natural sources of these phytonutrients. Carotenoids protect against various cancers, heart disease and promote eye health. Pumpkin Seeds are rich in Omega-3 and -6 essential fatty acids and Zinc, all of which are essential for good skin, and are also rich in L-Tryptophan which has anti-depressant properties.
  • Spinach; an excellent source of Iron, Vitamins K, A, C , B9 and E, Beta Carotene and Minerals, Spinach has anti-inflammatory anti-cancer and  immune boosting properties and promotes good eye health.
